Watching my child get into Good Trouble

Alex is currently at a counter protest, against a march of far right, immigrant hating fascists. As usual here in Colchester, the turn out of people on the “left” is many times more than those on the “right”. It’s so much easier to step out from behind a screen and show up in person when your message isn’t inherently shameful.

There’s a riot gear police presence at this demonstration and I’m getting updates from Alex in real time. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t anxious for his safety, but this is who we’ve raised him to be and I wouldn’t change a thing. I’d be there with him if I was even remotely physically able, but alas I’m not.

Organising is in Alex’s blood. In 2018 I organised an anti-ICE protest here in Colchester. Back then, 47 was 45 and busy separating children from their families and locking them in cages. Alex was 12 at the time and right there with me at the protest. I have a picture of him from that day that I cherish, now I’ll have to get one from today and frame them side by side.

Last year in Alex’s first year of college, he started volunteering for the campus group of “Friends Not Foes”, tutoring local children from refugee families in their English. He loved it and the experience even made him consider a career in teaching. This year he was asked to be the student leader of the whole group and be an integral part of shaping the programme!

So here I am on this overcast Saturday, deep in my feelings, watching my little freedom fighter fly the nest. This is the stage of parenting I’m in, a whole new world for me. I couldn’t be more proud of who he is. And I really can’t wait til he’s home again and in my arms for a big hug!

I’m sending my love, thanks and encouragement to everyone resisting the fascism we’re currently up to our eyeballs in. Stay safe, stay vigilant.

In Power,

Erin

If the fascists don't like it here they can leave.
